Fly fishing, like many other sports and hobbies, requires certain equipment to make the experience enjoyable and successful. Here are few of the essential items that every angler needs before making that first trip to the local lake or stream:
Rod and Reel
Fly fishing rods can range in price from around $50 to as much $3,000. However, you do not need to spend thousands of dollars to enjoy the sport. There are many good-quality rods available for purchase in the $100 to $150 range. You can buy a great reel for around $100 as well, or even less, if you shop around for a used one. Also, if you are not quite committed to the sport yet, you can rent equipment from a local outfitter.
Flies
A properly chosen fly can be the difference between a successful outing and a disappointing one. It’s best to choose your flies based on the type of insects that the fish in your area like to eat. Also, be sure to take seasonal feeding changes into consideration, and adjust your flies accordingly. If you are not sure what to use, consult the professionals at a fly shop.
Proper Attire
A hat, vest, and pair of waders are a good start for every fly fisherman, but, depending on where you plan to fish, you may need to add some other items. For instance, if your favorite fishing spot has very cold water, warm pants or fleece pant liners are probably a necessity. Nonslip boots are also a good investment, especially if you plan to fish in rocky areas or streams with very strong currents.
